7 great reasons to visit Alentejo in Portugal

Betty

The New Tuscany. This is how Alentejo region is often proudly named by its local inhabitants. And there are many reasons for that. You will find yourself miles away from hectic traffic, stress and high tempo, surrounded by amazing and mostly untouched nature. So doesn’t it make Alentejo a perfect place for your holiday getaway?

1. It’s one of the least touristic sides of Europe

Portugal is a beautiful country with many amazing places to explore, but if you are searching for something unspoiled and less touristic, you will probably fell in love with Alentejo. The name Alentejo literally means “land beyond the Tagus”. It is still one of the least-developed and least-populated regions in western Europe, therefore you will not find there any touristic resorts or big hotels. Just pure nature, cute little towns, empty roads and the most breathtaking landscapes.

The government of Portugal, after a painful lesson of how touristic and noisy Algarve has become, put in place very strict land rules in Alentejo to protect it. It is not allowed to build anything in the coastline and if you do, you need to follow really requiring rules. This made it really hard for any big investors to change this area into a touristic place, and left Alentejo pure and wild.

    Hey! Great blog post.
Where is the wine shop you mention near to Comporta selling wine made by prisoners?

    • Betty says:

Thank you so much Louisa! You just have to pass Comporta (there is only one main road) and than few kilometers after you will see on the right big white buildings. They do not look like prison thou ;) Than stop there, go to a guard that is sitting there at the entrance and ask him about wine. He does not speak english but once you will say “wine” and “shop” he will know what you mean. Just bear in mind the shop is closed in Saturdays (at least it was when we were there) :)
