Look Of The Week #17 – Being like Jane Birkin

Betty

Jane, the ultimate style muse for many. Although I do not have one style icon, Jane Birkin, a British actress and singer, definitely inspired many of my recent looks.

She was born in England, but later relocated to France. This is probably why most of us associate her as French. This 70’s style icon quickly became recognized for her effortless wardrobe. Jane’s style has been pretty consistent throughout her career and her it-factor comes from sophisticated ability of blending the casual with the sensual. She loved an easy going aesthetic and you could rarely see her in a real gown dresses. Even on the red carpet, as she has never been the one to follow red carpet style rules. Just have a look how she rocked a sweater on the red carpet HERE.

In 1981 Jane’s straw basket became the inspiration for a world-renowned sell-out handbag. I just love THIS LOOK and mixing winter and summer pieces has always been my favorite way of giving old wardrobe pieces a new life. Birkin’s unique style is as relevant today as it was 40 years ago and we can see examples of this in many current collections. From layered necklaces through vintage style denim and peasant blouses to total white outfits and basket bags. Birkin was always several decades ahead of trends.

Influenced by her timeless style I have mixed my 7 years old faux fur jacket with favorite straw basket, that I basically cannot live without. It’s specious enough to fit even my camera and easy to style with most of my clothes. And what more, it gives this kind of French effortless look that Jane was all a representation of. The rest of my outfit I kept simple and plain with no prints and no bold pieces. Dark turtleneck and black skinny jeans, that are probably my oldest and most used jeans, are a great and minimalistic base. I topped the look with over knee boots (cannot believe I own them for 10 years already!)  and my new earrings that were a Christmas gift from my husband. Aren’t they beautiful?

With love,

Betty
